Solution Development and Architecture

Developing effective and efficient IT systems is key to successful business performance. Solution development is a field in IT characterised by a wealth of terminology, a variety of approaches and many standards and recommendations concerning the processes to follow.

The certifications from BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT include analysis, modelling, design, implementation and architecture, in addition to areas such as configuration and release management.

Some features of the certifications are:

  • Modular approach
  • Full Diploma for specialists
  • Incorporates Agile, object-oriented (UML) and structured approaches
  • Links to Business Analysis, Software Testing and Service Management
  • Examination approach designed for flexibility
  • Foundation

    • Systems Development

The certificate in systems development from BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, provides the ability to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of systems development and delivery with regard to the following areas: life cycle approaches, architecture, business analysis, requirements engineering, systems analysis, design, development, testing and implementation.
  • Intermediate

    • Enterprise and Solution Architecture

The primary aims of this and the related certificate are to give enterprise and solution architects a broad framework that covers the range of architecture work that precedes and steers system development, and to focus attention on areas where the architect is responsible for effective design and risk management.
  • Practitioner

    • Enterprise and Solution Architecture

This practitioner certificate demonstrates that Enterprise and Solution Architects can apply their intermediate level knowledge to a case study. It also elaborates on the organisation and processes required to manage an architecture successfully.
    • Integrating Off-the-Shelf Software Solutions

Many organisations now choose to fulfil their information system requirements through purchasing and implementing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software package solutions. This certificate provides a focus and a framework for selecting, customising and implementing off-the-shelf software package solutions. This certification also counts towards the Diploma in Systems Development.
    • Systems Design Techniques

This certificate focuses on design issues. It is concerned with designing all aspects of the user interface (input forms, input screens, output screens, reports and documents, dialogues) as well as underlying principles of data and process design.
    • Systems Development Essentials

This certificate is concerned with the fundamental skills of systems development. Its focus is on systems investigation and quality assurance as it is perceived that these underpin all systems development. The certificate also introduces the candidate to how the systems development effort could be organised. The syllabus distinguishes between generic lifecycle types, methods and approaches.
    • Systems Modelling Techniques

This certificate examines candidates on their modelling skills and is primarily concerned with modelling systems from a variety of perspectives. It requires candidates to construct three main types of model reflecting these individual perspectives and to describe the interactions between them.
