Certificate in Software Asset Management Essentials  Foundation

The certificate in Software Asset Management Essentials covers the Software Asset Management (SAM) processes as described in the SAM module within the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL®). The certificate also covers the interdependencies between IT Service Management principles and SAM.

    What are the learning outcomes?

    Holders of the certificate will be able to demonstrate their competence in, and their ability to:

    • Describe the objectives and major activities required to implement SAM within an organisation
    • Explain and use SAM techniques and processes
    • Be aware of the support tools and techniques available for the implementation of SAM and be able to indicate how possible improvements can be made
    • Manage software assets through the stages of their lifecycle
    • Prepare and distribute SAM reports and plans throughout the organisation.
    • Understand and explain the interdependencies between SAM and other IT and Service Management processes
    • Make more efficient use of software licenses within an organisation and define, produce and analyse measurements and metrics
    • Assist organisations develop effective SAM processes in line with evolving SAM standards
    • Justify and sell the benefits of a SAM initiative.
    • Understand the impact of software ownership, legal risks and non compliance.

    Who is it aimed at?

    This certification is targeted at anyone within IT who has 1-2 years experience and be involved in the management or procurement of software who wants to gain knowledge in this the Software Asset Management area. It is also suitable for those who want to understand where their role fits in the wider environment of IT.

     
    Entry Requirements:

    There are no formal entry requirements for this certification but candidates should have a good awareness of IT Service Management terminology and concepts. Candidates may be in a stronger position to take the examination if they already hold the Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management.

    It is recommended that all candidates attend a training course run by an accredited Training Provider.

    Structure of the Exam

    • The examination consists of a one hour exam with 40 multiple choice questions.
    • It will be a 'closed book' examination i.e. no notes or books will be allowed into the examination room.
    • The pass mark is 65% (26 out of 40)
    • Accredited Training
      If your business language and mother tongue is not English then you are entitled to an additional 15 minutes. Please contact your Training Provider to request the additional time. You are allowed the use of a paper dictionary.
    • Attending Public Examination only
      If your business language and mother tongue is not English then you are entitled to an additional 15 minutes. Please contact your Training Provider to request the additional time. You are allowed the use of a paper dictionary. Candidates taking the examination only must complete the Extra Time Request form available to download from the website and send it to BCS a minimum of three weeks before the exam date.
     

    Exam Options, Dates & Locations

    There are three exam options for this certification:

    • Accredited Training Provider (course & exam)
    • Public Examinations (exam only)
    • Online Examination (exam only)

    Accredited Training Provider
    It is recommended that candidates take an accredited training course prior to taking the exam. If you attend an accredited training course, details of the exam can be obtained from your Training Provider.

    Time: 10.00am - 11.00am (1 hour)

    Public examinations must be booked and paid for a minimum of three weeks prior to the examination date (subject to availability). If you are applying directly, you should register and pay online using our Online Registration Facility.

    Online Examinations
    Taking the exam online via a computer based examination centre provides you with your exam result immediately. You can book to take the exam at a Prometric test centre - they have in excess of 5000 test centres in over 160 countries.

     

    Exam Fees

    Public Examinations cost £135 (exc VAT).

    If you are booking via an Accredited Training Provider or through an online examination centre then you can obtain information on fees and charges by contacting them directly.

     

    Register for the Exam

    Training Provider
    If you are taking training through an accredited training provider, you will obtain and submit your registration form through them.

    Public Examinations
    You will need to register and pay online using our Online Registration Facility a minimum of three weeks prior to the exam date. The preferred exam date will be subject to availability.
