The ability to identify and implement change is becoming increasingly important to all commercial organisations. As their dependence on IS grows, more and more successful companies are focusing on increasing their capability in IS Project Management in order to implement the system changes required. A vital step in growing Project Management capability is the training and qualification of project managers as professionals.

    Who is it aimed at?

    This certification is aimed at practitioners with previous experience or training in people management, motivation and control. 


    Entry Requirements:

    Candidates should have:

    • A minimum of four years' experience of management or four years' in Information Systems and have attended an accredited training course leading to the Certificate;

    or

    • A minimum of three years' experience as a project manager including the use of a recognised methodology. A report should also be submitted detailing the candidate's work experience and practices (direct entry route);

    Note: Open University (OU865M) qualification holders with either of the above can also apply for exemption from the course and written examination, allowing them to proceed directly to the oral examination. This is subject to the Certificate being passed no more than 5 years prior to the BCS oral examination date. A copy of the Certificate is required by BCS as verification that the candidate holds this qualification.

    Note: PRINCE2 Practitioners (through APMG) can apply for the PRINCE2 Conversion course. Candidates who already hold the PRINCE2 Practitioner qualification may take a shorter 40 hour course (rather than the standard 80 hour course). A copy of the PRINCE2 Practitioner Certificate is required by BCS when registering for the oral as verification that the candidate holds this qualification.     Structure of the Exam

    The examination is based around 3 parts:

    • Candidate Assessment during the course. Candidates will need to have a positive assessment to take the written examination.
    • 3 hour 'closed book' written examination. Candidates need to achieve a pass rate of 50% as well as a 50% pass mark for Question 1 to pass the written examination. Candidates who pass the written examination will be invited to attend an oral examination.
    • 45 minute oral examination. Candidates may be questioned on any of the topics on the syllabus including those already covered in the written examination as well as their background qualifying experience. Candidates must take the oral examination within 12 months of the notification of the written examination result.

    Once all three have been successfully completed, candidates will be awarded the Certificate in Project Management.

    Holders of the BCS Project Management Certificate may use the certificate towards entry to the APM Practitioner Qualification.

     

    Exam Options, Dates & Locations

    There are two exam options for this certification:

    • Accredited Training Provider (course & exam)
    • Public Examinations (exam only)

    Accredited Training Provider
    It is recommended that candidates take an accredited training course prior to taking the exam. Statistics show that overall pass rates are higher for candidates who have attended an accredited training course. Although the format will vary, the syllabus is generally covered in a two week residential course. If you attend an accredited training course, details of the written exam can be obtained from your Training Provider.

    Public Written Examinations
    Time: 1.00pm (3 hours plus 15 minutes reading time)

    Exam Fees

    • Public Examinations cost £165 (exc VAT).
    • Oral Examinations cost £265 (exc VAT).

    If you are booking via an Accredited Training Provider then you can obtain information on fees and charges by contacting them directly.

     

    Register for the Exam

    Training Providers
    If you are taking training through an accredited training provider, you will obtain and submit your registration form through them.

    Public Written Examinations

    In order to register for the examination candidates should normally have attended an accredited training course. However BCS is willing to consider applications for exemption from the taught component of the process.

    Applications for exemption from accredited training must include the required report and relevant work experience.

    Candidates wishing to enter the examination via the direct entry (public examination) route must download and complete the direct entry registration form and return this along with your payment method for the appropriate fee a minimum of four weeks prior to exam date. The preferred exam date should be noted at the top of the form, although this will be subject to availability.

    Candidates will be advised of BCS's decision in writing. The decision of BCS is final.

    Public Oral Examinations
    On passing the written element of the examination you may proceed to the Oral exam. To book the oral exams please contact BCS Customer Service on 01793 417655 stating the preferred exam date (please note the date will be subject to availability).
